At long last, I have photos from the Dickens ball I went to at the beginning of December. They were hidden on my friend's computer in a folder of cat photos, which sounds plausible to me. Her cats are crafty, and probably put them there themselves.

I have to tell you that I look like a hag in most of them, so apologies for that.

All of us together. From left to right: me, Eric, Dawn. As the night wore on, everybody's clothes magically started fitting better. In the following photos, you can see how they've settled on our bodies in this one. I know my corset shifted downwards about halfway through the night and everything magically fit better.

Full-length. The flash on the camera reflected madly off the taffeta. The bodice actually fits much better than that, and the pleats in the skirt . . . are that bad. I need to rip it out and re-attach, as I pleated it about half-an-hour before the ball, so it's terribly uneven. I was also safety-pinned into my bodice. And my skirt was about three inches too long. So period it hurts.

Much closer. I think the waist on the bodice is a little long, but it might just be the bulk of the skirt pleats pushing it out. We'll see if re-pleating the skirt and cartridge pleating the back will help with that. My right chemise sleeve kept escaping out the bottom of my bodice sleeve all night, so that's what that peek of white is.

For accessories, I wore a wreath of pink rosebuds pinned under my chignon, coral cameo earrings, and a pearl/turquoise glass bead necklace. I had a handpainted floral silk shawl and a pair of over-the-elbow black gloves. For shoes, I wore black ballet slippers.

My undies, minus the hoop, which is hanging on the doorknob behind me. This was a stealth picture my roommate took of me. I have no recollection of him taking a photo at all, but I think I was probably in the middle of agreeing with his girlfriend that I wasn't sure I liked the idea of him taking photos of me in a corset. (Which still needs to be bound. I might just cut out a smaller size and re-make it though. I can lace it shut, and it's four sizes smaller than I usually wear. The busk is also too long for the pattern.)

Dawn was absolutely gorgeous, and she photographs so well. Before we got to the ball, as you can see in the group photo, we tucked the straps of her camisole under the edges of the bodice. There was some cutwork on the yoke of the camisole, and it was absolutely precious peeking out. Before she wears it again, I need to whipstitch the boning in. I ran out of time to do it before the ball, so the bodice kept sliding up at the waist.

Her mother made her the floral underskirt and Dawn made her own overskirt, in something like fifteen minutes, without a pattern. It was pretty cool -- she popped into the kitchen, and next thing I knew, she popped out with an overskirt.

Dawn also wore a little purple cap with velvet flowers attached to it. It's vintage, from the 1940s or '50s, I'd say. She wore a vintage Edwardian cape in plum wool with a black silk collar to keep warm.

They are an absolutely adorable couple.

Here's Eric in his kicking red vest. I really don't have much to say about this, past that I cheated and didn't line the front and need to refinish one of the armholes. Eric completely looked the part of the some young bohemian artist with his curly red hair and goatee. He was very, very dashing.

This is Dawn's living room before we left. I had a mini-sweatshop going so everyone could finish their outfits. Eric sewed the buttons on his vest, and did a great job, despite protesting that he would mess it up. So proud of that boy.

Thank you. It's very, very magenta in real life and the lustre in it is gorgeous, but slightly less than the flash makes it out to be.
