When you say "pattern," do you mean the stitch pattern or an actual pattern that someone has written?
OK, I don't know of any yarns that will get you that effect by themselves. I think you're going to have to buy multiple balls of different kinds of yarn to get that effect.
For the yarn fiber content, it looks like the yarn has slight halo to it, so I would go with a wool yarn with some angora or mohair content to it.
I think the yarn is also probably hand-dyed because of the unevenness of the colors. Machine-dyed yarns are much more consistent.
I went and googled "boomtown scarf yarn" and found the who_knits comm on LJ. This entry suggest Lorna's Laces Shepherd Bulky, which is a nice yarn but really expensive because it's hand-dyed. It also looks like it's more evenly spun than the yarn in the actual scarf and doesn't have the same halo. And the colors are "brighter" than the ones in the TV scarf.
Handpainted Yarn is about half the price, and has nice yarn. It's merino, so it will develop that halo over time as fibers come loose. They don't have quite as much variegated as they do solid colors, but the solid colors are aren't very solid. I've worked a lot with this yarn, and it's a real pleasure to work with.
You could also dye your own, but that's a big pain in the ass and the learning curve is sometimes pretty steep.
