Firstly, thank you! It's silly how excited I get about millinery. I really do love wearing hats.
I think you're probably right about the hair. The other problem is that the hat is really heavy in the back, so I either need a hatpin or some sort of counterweight in the front. It's also a little bit higher in the real thing, since the tabs are formed to the back of my head (the wire, you see).
I think the fact that the original looks like it's formed felt or covered straw comes into play, too. It has a rounded point, but which give it a little bit more height.
